Tigers Sign Centre Abbey Sutherland

The Melbourne Tigers are thrilled to announce the signing of 6’4” centre Abbey Sutherland for the 2024 NBL1 South Season.

Abbey joins the Tigers after a four year college career at Houston Christian University, where she started in 73 of a possible 83 games. Abbey returned last year and joined the Kilsyth Cobra’s for the 2023 season. Abbey also represented Victoria Country at U16 and U18 Australian Junior Championships and was a teammate of fellow Tiger newcomer Ella Ogier. During her college career Abbey was named in the Southland All-Academic 2nd team and led her HCU team in blocked shots. Abbey finished her college career averaging 7ppg, 5rbd, 2ass, 1stl and 1.5blk per game shooting 36% from beyond the arc.

Coach Kaleb Sclater said,

“It’s awesome for us to have Abbey join us next season, she is a great person and fits the values that we want to bring to the club. Abbey gives us a presence on court who can alter shots on defence and set hard screens on the offense. I think the one thing I really liked about her game is her ability to pass from the post and she can stretch the floor, which will open up the paint for us.”

Abbey said,

“I am super excited to have signed with the Melbourne Tigers for 2024 and I can’t wait to get started. Melbourne feels like the right fit for me and I am super excited to work with all the coaching staff and meet everyone at the club, I can’t wait for season 2024.”

Abbey joins Tylah Hooper, Sammy Simons and Ella Ogier in our 2024 NBL1 South Women’s team so far with more signings on the horizon!
